MZA is the pseudonym for the full time teacher and part time artist. MZA works in a variety of mediums, consistently mastering and learning his practice.
His work has always evolved around themes of race, politics, identity and activism in our modern society.
My work goes through stages of focus, a big part of my work is evolved around community and culture, furthermore the Culture of Hip Hop, exploring the icons, the roots and the branding of Hip Hop.
Creating 2D and 3D pieces to show and represent the relationship I have with it and how I can pass this onto others, these pieces are Hip Hop you can hold. Varying between traditional illustration, graphic design, printmaking, and painting.
My last project 'Not all Goats have horns' started in Lockdown in which he started creating portraits of Hip Hop icons or the Greatest of all time. This then evolved and would become the title of my first solo show in Sept 2023. It succeeded in its goal of exploring art practices, music, bringing people together over food, dance and art.
My current work is circling back to a project initially started post university, but ultimately one of the biggest pillars of my practice. Where are you really From? (Working Title) is a story of mixed race artists, by mixed race artists and explores through mediums of poetry, portraiture, and moving image. In collaboration I have been inviting fellow dual heritage artists to take part in this project by being painted as well as being invited to contribute a poem as well as a piece of their own work in any medium that fits the project brief. This project is aimed to be completed in 2025.
