Sondliwe Pamisa
About Sondliwe
My name is Sondliwe Pamisa, and I make art. I paint really, but I’m open to whatever medium the stories need to take form in. I write too. So rest assured behind everything I make, there’s a lot of thought and written work behind it. I studied at Leeds Arts University and will be enrolling at the University Arts London this coming Autumn. I also had a solo show titled, ‘Soil’ earlier on in the year which was created in conjunction with the good people at Sable Radio and Group Ginger. A significant moment, and so from there, there’s only one direction to go, and that’s onwards and upwards. So, yep, thats me. Nice to meet you.

What drives my? Unknown unknowns.

What I am most proud of is the fact that I have learnt to create my own excitement and hunger in making work as opposed to sitting back and waiting for the idea to just come to me.

About the project
@sondliwe
The print I'm creating for Assembly's Black Joy Matters commission is a representation of presence. Colour and shape are my 1st language but it is through the act of painting and slowing down that I have the opportunity to reflect and rediscover what is often right in front of me. Sometimes it feels like a coincidence or a conjuring and then I remember my people have been speaking for a long time with intense clarity. It is right in front of you, but you have to be ready to receive it.

My print explores movement, mindfulness and connection with our bodies. We must always be mindful of what we are, where we are, who we are, how we are and why we are. To not take life for granted is what we can hope for, learning always to live through it all with a semblance of peace and the drive to wake up each day and be.

Lockdown has also illustrated there’s a lot of unnecessary things we choose to stress over. I hope coming out of this, we operate with a deeper sense of self and understanding of who and what makes us who we are. May we never forget that in the sunshine of our lives, through the storm and after the rain, it is all with God, in all ways and forever.
