UNSEEN HISTORIES- PAID ARTIST COMMISSIONS
Four paid artist commissions as part of Unseen Histories- a festival exploring Black British history.
Unseen Histories is a month-long festival of artworks and events exploring Black British history in
Leeds. The festival will be created and curated by Black artists in and around the city, with support
from Heritage Corner, the pioneers of the Leeds Black History Walk, and Assembly House, an artist
studios and project space in Armley, Leeds.
Unseen Histories is looking for 4 artists to create original artworks that investigate, unearth or
respond to Black British stories in our city.
Assembly House and Heritage Corner are working with Leeds Industrial Museum (Armley Mills)
and the Leeds Discovery Centre. Each artist commission will be based at, or have access to the
collections of these partner organisations.
Each commission is paid, and you’ll be given a budget towards materials, and space to create your
artwork. You’ll also have producing support from Assembly House and research support from
Heritage Corner to help you to bring your creation to life.
All 4 of the artworks will be shown as part of the festival’s finale event. In this day-to-evening event,
Heritage Corner will take audience members on a Black British History bus tour around significant
parts of Leeds and finishing at Armley Mills. The audience will then come to Assembly to see the
final 4 artworks and enjoy local food, drinks and music.
Commissions are open to BIPOC artists based in Leeds and the surrounding areas. We welcome
applications from BIPOC LGBTQIA+ and Disabled artists. Artists can be at any stage in their
career and do not need to have a formal arts education or an extensive track record of professional
residencies, public events or commissions. We understand that there are always blindspots in
recruiting for commissions and aim to remove barriers for applicants where possible. If you are
