Mike co-founded Assembly House along with Lester. He paints, draws, makes prints and collage, as well as live painting and set building for festivals. Mike illustrates everything from record sleeves to posters. His illustrations can be described as graphical realism. Mike first started drawing when he was a child and then moved to Leeds to study Fine Art and has been here ever since.
Mike says his biggest achievement is starting Assembly House. He is also very proud of other projects such as Common Ground, a mural that explores the culture of Kirkgate by drawing on images from the history of the area. Murals are important for Mike because they are place making. Mike is inspired by music and organises most of the gigs and music events at Assembly House. His other favourite creative places in Leeds are Open Source Arts and MAP. MAP is especially important to Mike as they’ve set a standard for what’s possible – they have been able to buy a building by raising money for a positive project.
