Black Joy Matter - Print commission
We want to give Black-identifying artists in Leeds a paid opportunity to celebrate Black brilliance.
This isn’t an attempt to gloss over the very real and life-threatening issues facing people of colour here and abroad. Documenting and critiquing racist power structures is vital work. We hope these commissions can be a chance for radical joy in the face of hate.
We are inviting submissions for 1 or 2 colour designs. Designs will be Riso printed by Footprint Workers Co-Operative and sold online. All proceeds will be divided equally between the artist and a charity/fund of their choice. Assembly House will cover all printing costs, marketing and shipping and pay each artist an additional up-front fee of £150 for use of their design.
Submissions of existing designs are totally fine. If you are submitting a new idea just give us an indication of what you would do, and a link to your existing work, no need to send final designs. All artwork and ideas remain exclusively the property of the artists. We can offer advice and guidance on technical issues such as resolution/format/colour profiles/optimising for print/scanning/photographing physical works to the selected applicants.
You can apply through this 2 question form. Alternatively, you can just send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘Print Commission Application’, a few sentences about your idea and some links or images of your work.
If you are experiencing any barriers to application please get in touch and we will do everything we can to accommodate you and assist you.
Applying for this opportunity does NOT exclude you from our other available funds. This commission is specifically for artists who identify as Black.
